Dirk Hogendorp, a French General, was an aide-de-camp to Napoleon Bonaparte; he spent his last years in exile in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, living in a house built on the slope of the Corcovado Mountain, where he died in 1822.
Jacques Étienne Victor Arago took part in the scientific voyage around the world in the Uranie and Physicienne Corvettes commanded
by Captain Freycinet during 1817-1820. He served as a draftsman to the expedition producing ca. 500 drawings of landscapes,
coastal views, people, plants, etc.; and as a reporter (his observations were published in several books). On at least two
occasions he visited Rio de Janeiro, where he met General Hogendorp. Drawings in this collection were possibly produced during
one of his visits to Brazil.
